We had a blast at the Foundation's Scholarship Fundraising Luncheon on May 24, 2015, at the First Hawaiian Center. Matt & Marc played great music! Munchiez by Sweet Pea Cafe provided us ono kalua pig and cabbage, adobo, and shoyu chicken, as well as their tasty candied bacon cookies and chocolate dipped fruits. Our guests also took a shot at going home with one of ten awesome items.
We also awarded our first ever scholarship to Evelyn Chow, a senior at Kalani High School. See her bio here. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event successful! jo

We're so excited to get the ball rolling.
This month, we've completed the application for our scholarship. We're looking to award a $500 scholarship to a high school senior looking to attend college. We've also finalized the Alahoku Fellows program schedule and began recruiting participants, mentors, and experts. In addition to starting these two initiatives, we've been involved in fundraising with iDcard sales. Through all of this, we've watched how family, friends, and complete strangers supported our Foundation and its efforts. It's unbelievable. We're so grateful. On Friday, November 14th, we had our very first fundraiser at Air Park Karaoke Lounge in Honolulu. Around 60 of our friends showed up and showed off their bling and singing skills! We had a lot of fun, and we hope everyone did too. Thank you to our friend Nicolette at Munchiez by Sweet Pea Cafe for providing us the ono Mochiko Chicken bentos, Kai for creating our Instagram picture prop, Alysa for the diamond decorations, and all the attendees for making it a memorable night!
jo We're happy to announce two new developments! 1. The IRS granted our application for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. ("The benefits of having 501(c)(3) status include exemption from federal income tax and eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions." See Publication 4220.) 2. Thanks to the Scholarship Committee, the Foundation finalized the qualifications, criteria, and application process for the scholarship. (Great job, folks!) Check back later for the application. jo Despite the bad weather outside, most of the Scholarship Committee met for the first time today to discuss the qualifications, criteria, and application of the scholarship. The members spent time discussing the Foundation's mission and how the scholarship fits within it. The committee also shared their thoughts about the definition of "leadership."
We missed Erin Hisano and Erin Moore, but they will definitely be involved in the process. Check our website later for the final qualifications, criteria, and application materials. jo Cara is leading our Scholarship Committee and has recruited an excellent group of volunteers. We’re so happy and excited to have Tanya Sasaoka, Alysa Iha, Erin Hisano, Kira Nakamura, and Erin Moore serve on the committee! Together, they will decide the criteria and qualifications for the scholarship and select our first ever scholarship recipient. We’re making progress, folks!
jo We're gearing up for our first ever fundraiser! We can't wait for everyone to join us for a fun night of karaoke. This year's theme is "Bling'n Karaoke Night."
This is a very exciting time for Cara and me! We've just set up this Foundation, and we're ready to make a positive impact in Hawaii!
Our Foundation started as a way to "pay it forward." Through the years, we've been very fortunate to have received so much support from family members, friends, teachers, and even complete strangers! Now that we're done with school (for now), it's time for us to help the next generation of Hawaii to achieve their goals. Our Foundation envisions a Hawaii, where today’s youth are engaged, knowledgeable of the issues affecting our islands’ communities, and equipped to make a positive change. As a way to work towards our vision, we intend to establish a scholarship for talented high school students to attend college. We also plan to create a fellowship program to encourage high school students to pursue higher education and to develop leadership skills. We're thankful for all the support and interest we've received thus far. This is only the beginning! Stay tuned! jo |
